The M Family
There’s something extra special about photographing a big, blended family, but throw in a surprise proposal, and you’ve got pure magic. I recently had the honor of capturing such a moment at Bowditch Point Park in Fort Myers, and it was amazing!
The M was such a joy to work with—a beautiful blended family with their adult kids, their partners (and soon to be fiance!!), and even a couple of friends, all of themfully present for their session and up for anything I threw at them. I love when families come in ready to have a good time, and this crew did not disappoint! Mom was absolutely glowing, surrounded by her kids, and you could just feel the love radiating off her. There’s something so powerful about that kind of joy—it’s contagious.
Dad, was also beaming as we set up a group shot with all his boys next to a piece of driftwood (my favorite spot at Bowditch to seat people!), and you could see how much it meant to him to have all his sons together in one frame. These are the moments that stick with you.
Now, here’s where things get really exciting. As we were nearing the end of the session, I had to change up my original plan for the surprise proposal. I mean, we had a low tide that stretched on forever and a golden sunset that was practically begging for something epic! I quickly adjusted things on the fly and gave the soon-to-be groom the signal. Next thing you know, He is getting down on one knee in the water, with that shimmering reflection of the sunset all around them. It was beyond perfect.
His fiancée had no idea what was coming—she was completely surprised, and the happiness on her face was everything. I’m not going to lie, I may have gotten a little teary-eyed behind the camera. (Can you blame me?)
And if that wasn’t enough to make my photographer heart swell, after delivering their gallery, mom told me that one of their neurodivergent family members, who usually hates having their picture taken, actually enjoyed themselves during the session. That right there is one of the highest compliments I could ever receive. It’s these kinds of moments that remind me why I do what I do.
This family was all about connection, fun, and making memories together—throw in a sunset proposal, and it truly became one of those sessions I’ll never forget.
